EMAIL OUT...

We've got 2 weeks left... so the plan for tomorrow:

1. Break students into 3 teams:
  • a) "Littlies" as Fiona calls them -- Eden, Demetrius, Lucas
b) Girls (older ones)
c) Boys -- this is a big group and I have enough materials that they can either break into 2 groups or be one big group and do 1 or 2 display boards and 2 base plates -- there was no easy way to split this group so let's just go with how it goes tomorrow...

2. Would like each team to come up with a team name (we may have to explore names tomorrow and decide next week)

3. I'll go through a photo display of each of the weeks we had and show photos of some of the things we did each week -- and for each week we can brainstorm some of the things we learned about in that area (if you want to go over them in the car, here's the list):
  • Ocean areas drawn out and what belongs in each area
  • Coastal: Tidal pools
  • Coastal: Shells
  • Coral Reef
  • Underwater vehicles
  • Open Ocean (orka's / sharks)
  • Shipwrecks (buoyancy / Titanic)
  • The Deep
  • (Polar scheduled for tomorrow but I don't think we'll get to it -- if someone has something specific about polar oceans, let me know.
4. Have each team figure out what they'd like to put on their display boards

I'll have a bunch of photos for them to choose from and they could do one side of photos of their experiences -- or wherever -- I really don't care! Then if we have a Mom in each group writing labels or typing them on the computer, we can print out labels and tape on...
  • Team Name
  • Names of the students on each team -- include a photo of that person
  • A list of ocean zones -- or maybe a drawing of the oceans and what's in each zone? Maybe their favorite zone, favorite animals, things they've learned? Good to try to get them to decide on one theme between them so it's a team story but if it doesn't work, it's OK. We can try again for Senior Solutions.
Also, all the photos can be looked through -- we have a new printer so any copying of pages could be done on the old printer (in the main conference room) and cut out
I don't mind if the teams choose to do a whole ocean view or choose one area to focus on. But good to have labels with a bit of thought behind it so when people look at their displays, they know what's there.

IF they want to plan it and then decide to bring in final things for next week to finish it off then, that's OK as well.

5. When they run out of steam, we'll give them base plates with the center marked off (like this picture: http://wakeroboticsjrfll.wikispaces.com/Ocean+Odyssey+Team+Sign+up) -- only center piece is needed. They choose a zone and build a scene behind that middle line. They also build a vehicle -- I have 4 sets of "ocean specific" pieces for them to use -- grippers, magnetic arms, treasures, etc. -- their vehicle can be motorized or not motorized.

WHILE THEY"RE BUILDING -- hopefully -- we can talk about the Open House plans.

NOTE: If anyone has any hole punches (Sue?) or other things to help decorate their boards, please bring them. I have some ocean stickers and lots of types of paper... and scissors. And some gluesticks (might need a couple more).
